First Agniveer, then NEET, now farmers... who is Rahul Gandhi eyeing?

New Delhi: As soon as he became the leader of the opposition, Rahul Gandhi raised the issue of Agniveer and after the way it got media attention, he raised the issue of NEET. Now it seems that he is trying to corner a big vote bank i.e. young students through the farmers. The farmers’ organizations, which have so far avoided taking the support of political parties, are now pleading for help from all parties except the BJP regarding their demands. These organizations have also requested the Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha to bring a private member bill and get it voted on.

Rahul Gandhi seems to be eyeing these vote banks in the upcoming assembly elections as well. Therefore, Rahul Gandhi is going to raise these issues with full strength both in Parliament and on the streets. On Wednesday, 12 farmer leaders met Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi in his room in Parliament House and requested him that he or someone from his side should bring a private member bill in the House so that BJP’s stand becomes clear, their anti-farmer stance is exposed in front of the country and pressure is also created on TDP and Nitish Kumar and the country knows which side these two parties, who have become crutches for the government, are on when it comes to the issue of farmers.

In fact, farmers are now in a mood to fight the ruling BJP to the finish, demanding legal guarantee of MSP, farmer loan waiver and support price based on the recommendations of Swaminathan Commission. These organizations have written letters to opposition MPs as well as MPs and leaders of NDA constituent parties and sought time to meet them. Interestingly, this letter has been written to everyone except 240 MPs of BJP.

These farmer organizations have requested the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, to present a private member bill on their demands and then conduct voting on it, through which the picture of which party and which MP is with the demands of the farmers and who is against them will be revealed to everyone. Through this, the farmer organizations are openly trying to create a rift in the NDA, and also want to increase pressure on the BJP by isolating it.

After talking to the farmer organizations, Rahul Gandhi said that he will take further steps in this matter by talking to other leaders and parties of India Block. He fully supports the demands of the farmer leaders and all the opposition parties will jointly put pressure on the government. Now it will be interesting to see whether Rahul Gandhi himself brings a private member and puts pressure on the government on the pending demands of the farmers or their demands are met through some other MP.

The farmers had surrounded Delhi from all sides for many months on these issues and the opposition was quite aggressive on the government’s preparations to put barbed wire and borders in their way. Rahul Gandhi had supported the demands of the farmers even then but after the situation changed in the Lok Sabha, with the victory of 99 MPs of the Congress Party and the India Block having around 240 MPs, Rahul Gandhi is working under a new strategy to increase pressure on the government.
