New Delhi. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday said in the Lok Sabha that Rs 1,112.57 crore has been allocated for the installation of Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system ‘Kavach’ in the financial year 2024-25. In a written reply to questions raised by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MPs – Kanimozhi Karunanidhi and Rani Sreekumar on the details of the funds allocated and utilised for the installation of ‘Kavach’ system in the country, he said, “The amount utilised so far on Kavach works is Rs 1,216.77 crore. The allocation during the year 2024-25 is Rs 1,112.57 crore.”

According to Vaishnav, ‘Kavach’ is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system and requires the highest safety certification. He said, “Kavach helps in running the train within the specified speed limit by automatically applying brakes in case the loco pilot fails to apply the brakes and also helps in running the train safely during bad weather.”

The minister said that so far ‘Kavach’ has been deployed on 1,465 km route and 144 engines in South Central Railway. Giving information about the progress of installation of ‘Kavach’ on Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah corridors, Vaishnav said that optical fiber cable has been laid on 4,275 km route and 364 telecom towers have been installed. He said that Kavach equipment has been installed on 285 stations, 319 locos and 1,384 km rail track.
