Heavy destruction due to rain from UP-Uttarakhand to Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat


New Delhi. Four people died in rain-related incidents in Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh on Saturday. Rains lashed parts of north-west and north India including Delhi. People got relief from humidity after the evening rain in the capital Delhi, but people had to face problems due to waterlogging and traffic jams. A mother and daughter died after being hit by a landslide in New Tehri, Uttarakhand, while two people lost their lives due to lightning in Jalaun district of Uttar Pradesh. At the same time, the body of a 26-year-old man was recovered on Saturday in Maharashtra. He was swept away by floodwaters during heavy rains in Pune on July 24. With this, the death toll in such incidents has increased to 6 since Wednesday.

Pune as well as other parts of Maharashtra Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane and Raigad received heavy rains earlier this week. Three people were killed and two others injured when a building collapsed in Navi Mumbai on Saturday. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy to very heavy rains were recorded at some places with extremely heavy rains at isolated places over Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu, West Madhya Pradesh, Madhya Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, Coastal Karnataka and Odisha. Heavy rains occurred at isolated places over Haryana-Chandigarh, East Rajasthan, East Madhya Pradesh, Kerala and Mahe, Konkan and Goa, Vidarbha and North Karnataka.

26.5 mm rain in Delhi
The Pusa Observatory in Delhi recorded 26.5 mm of rain, while the city’s maximum temperature was 36.3 degrees Celsius, 1.4 degrees above the season’s average. The Delhi Police issued an alert about roads affected due to waterlogging and advised commuters to take alternate routes. Traffic on both sides of Anuvrat Marg was affected due to waterlogging near the Qutub Minar metro station.

Situation worsens in Himachal
The emergency centre in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, said 56 people have died in rain-related incidents in the state since the onset of monsoon on June 27. Intermittent rains continued in some parts of the state and Dhaulkuan in Sirmaur district received 123 mm of rain. Nahan received 74.5 mm, Katola 40.2 mm, Palampur 32 mm, Paonta Sahib 31.2 mm, Dharamshala 27.6 mm, Sundernagar 26.8 mm and Baijnath 25 mm of rain.

Landslide in Uttarakhand
A 42-year-old woman and her minor daughter died in a landslide in a village following incessant rains in the Budhakedar area in New Tehri, Uttarakhand. DM Mayur Dixit said that the bodies of Sarita Devi and 15-year-old Ankita were recovered during a search operation conducted by police and SDRF personnel in Toli village. Three shops were swept away in Budhakedar in the strong current of the Dharmganga river. Apart from this, several bridges were damaged, connecting roads were broken and water supply along with electricity was disrupted. The collector said that people living on the banks of the river have been shifted to safer places. Ghansali Deputy District Magistrate Apoorv Singh said that a cowshed was destroyed due to landslide in Toli in which six animals were trapped. Along with this, most of the rivers in the state are in spate.

Accident in Uttar Pradesh
Two people were killed and two others were seriously injured when lightning struck them while they were grazing goats in a field in Usargaon village in Jalaun district of Uttar Pradesh. Circle Officer (Kalpi) Devendra Pachauri said that Balram (60) and Bhole (40) died on the spot, while Rajendra and Surendra Pal Singh were seriously injured. The injured have been taken to the district hospital. On the other hand, heavy to very heavy rains have been recorded in large parts of eastern Rajasthan. Chittorgarh recorded the highest rainfall of 8 cm.
