Washington: After President Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the election, the door to become the Democratic candidate in the presidential election has opened for many contenders. President Biden has given his support to Vice President Kamala Harris as the party candidate. Apart from Biden, many other prominent Democratic leaders have also come forward in favor of Harris’s candidature. But, it is not clear how easy her path to candidacy in the party will be. Apart from Kamala Harris, there are many others who can become contenders.

Here is the list of major contenders to become the Democratic candidate

Kamala Harris

Born in Oakland, California, Vice President Kamala Harris considers the late civil rights lawyer and jurist Thurgood Marshall as her inspiration and often mentions the influence of her parents, who were involved in the civil rights movement, on her life. Los Angeles lawyer Douglas Emhoff is Kamala Harris’s husband. Biden called Harris a “fearless warrior” when he chose her as his vice-presidential candidate in 2020. Kamala has been serving as Vice President since January 2021. She is the first woman, first black and first citizen of South Asian origin to hold this post in America. Harris (59) won her seat in the US Senate in 2016 after being elected twice as California’s Attorney General.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker is the richest sitting politician in the US. He is the heir to the ‘Hyatt Hotel’. His net worth is US$3.4 billion. He is ranked 250th on the ‘Forbes 400’ list of richest Americans.

Gretchen Whitmer is the governor of Michigan. She rose rapidly in the Democratic Party after winning her first gubernatorial election in 2018 after serving for a decade and a half in the state legislature.

Mayor Brown appointed Newsom to a vacant seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors two years later and he was later re-elected to the seat. Newsom later won the mayoral election and gained national attention in 2004 by directing the San Francisco clerk to issue marriage licenses to gay couples.
