New Delhi. For some time now, there has been a lot of discussion about AC and non-AC coaches in trains. Leaders of opposition parties as well as people from some other sections have raised this question many times that the number of AC coaches in trains has been increased, due to which common people traveling in general coaches are facing problems. It is alleged that due to the low number of general coaches along with sleeper, people have to book tickets in AC coaches by spending more money. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has responded to this allegation in Parliament. He also told how many AC and non-AC coaches are there in mail/express trains with 22 bogies.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav told Parliament that under the existing policies related to the structure of mail and express trains, there is a provision of 12 non-AC coaches and 8 AC coaches of general and sleeper category in a 22-coach train. Vaishnav gave this information in the Rajya Sabha in a written reply to a question. He said, ‘There was a lot of variation in passenger traffic between 2019 and 2024 due to the Kovid epidemic. However, Indian Railways operates various types of regular timetable trains with different composition such as suburban, short distance passenger trains, long distance mail / express / superfast trains. ‘

10000 non AC coaches
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav, in his reply in the Rajya Sabha, said that the Railways is planning to prepare 10,000 non-AC passenger coaches. Vaishnav said, ‘Under the current policy, there is a provision of 12 non-AC and 8 AC coaches in mail/express trains with 22 coaches. This gives more space to the passengers of general and non-AC sleeper coaches.’ In this way, the Railway Minister also responded to those critics who say that more AC coaches are being installed in trains. Coaches of general and sleeper class are being deliberately reduced.

Ashwini Vaishnav said that at present, two-thirds of the total passenger coaches being used for train service operation are non-AC and one-third are AC. He said that Indian Railways has also started operating Amrit Bharat train services which are completely non-AC trains providing high quality services to the passengers. He said that keeping in view the increased demand, Indian Railways has planned to manufacture 10,000 non-AC passenger coaches including general and sleeper coaches.
