New Delhi: The government on Wednesday told the Lok Sabha that more than 200 Indian pilgrims have died during Haj in 2024, most of them due to cardiac arrest and respiratory problems. In a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister for Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju said that the Government of India has placed great emphasis on the successful conduct of the Haj pilgrimage and ensuring the safety and well-being of Indian pilgrims.

“A total of 201 Indian pilgrims died during Hajj, most of whom died due to cardiac arrest and respiratory problems,” the minister said. He said 70 per cent of the total deceased were aged 60 years or above. He said the number of Khadim-ul-Hujjaj (KUH) sent by the Hajj Committee of India to assist pilgrims in Hajj 2024 has increased to 641, which is more than double the number of last year.

The officials had advised

During the Haj pilgrimage, volunteers helped the pilgrims in every way possible. Pilgrims were given cold drinks and ice cream to escape the heat. Saudi authorities also advised pilgrims to use umbrellas, drink plenty of water and avoid going out in the sun during the hottest hours of the day. (Language)
