Manila: The widespread impact of typhoon ‘Gaemi’ is being seen in the Philippines. Due to heavy rains, flood-like conditions have arisen in the capital Manila and surrounding cities. In view of the situation, the authorities have had to close schools and offices. Many flights have also been canceled and a state of disaster has been declared in Manila. Typhoon ‘Gaemi’ is moving rapidly towards Taiwan, it has not reached the Philippines but it has intensified the seasonal monsoon rains. Many areas of the Philippines have been receiving continuous rains for the last few days due to which the incidents of landslides have also increased.

12 people have died

The storm has been locally named ‘Karina’, the National Disaster Agency said. At least 12 people have died and more than 600,000 people have been displaced due to the storm. Water has filled up to the neck in some areas. The Philippines Coast Guard has said that 260 passengers and 16 ships are stranded in ports, while airlines canceled 114 flights from Manila on Wednesday. Financial markets also remained closed.

People were rescued

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. during a briefing asked disaster relief agencies to prepare supplies and provide aid to isolated communities. In the riverside city of Marikina, emergency workers used rubber boats to rescue residents by wading through waist-deep waters. Some people also took refuge in churches, officials said.

‘Everything is ruined’

“The flood reached the second floor of our house, all our things were ruined, everything was wet, nothing was left,” Ladylyn Bernas, a woman who took refuge in a church, told Reuters. Social media posts showed several vehicles stranded in water or floating on roads and highways. The Philippines is hit by an average of 20 tropical storms each year, causing flooding and deadly landslides.
