Male: Relations between India and Maldives have not been good in recent times. But, now Maldives has said that about 68 percent of the work on the Hanimaadhoo International Airport being built with Indian assistance has been completed. India has said that this project will have a transformational effect on the entire northern region of the island nation. The Ministry of Infrastructure has announced that the construction work of Hanimaadhoo International Airport is 67.5 percent complete, which is being funded by the Government of India with a loan assistance of MVR 80 crore (Maldivian currency). The work of the project is progressing rapidly.

“The airport expansion, handed over to India’s GMC in September, includes a 2.7-km runway, a 1.3 million passenger capacity terminal and a jet fuel storage facility. According to the infrastructure ministry, 97 per cent of the work on the 2,400-metre long runway and apron has been completed, and the completed portion is already in use. The entire project is expected to be completed by November,” news portal TruthMV.com said on Thursday.

Hanimaadhoo is located about 290 km north of Male, the capital of the island group. The Indian High Commissioner posted on ‘X’ after visiting on Wednesday, saying, “The Hanimaadhoo International Airport, built under Indian loan assistance, will have a transformational impact on the northern region of Maldives. The significant progress witnessed during the visit of the project site by the Ambassador along with the Minister of Infrastructure and Minister of Civil Aviation was appreciated.” (Language)
