Washington: US President Joe Biden termed his decision to withdraw from the presidential election race proposed in November as the ‘right step’. He said that due to the COVID-19 infection, he is not able to go among the people right now, but he will soon be seen campaigning with Vice President Kamala Harris. Biden (81) surprised everyone by suddenly announcing his withdrawal from the presidential race last Sunday. He had recommended the name of Kamala Harris (59) of Indian-African origin for the presidential candidature from the Democratic Party.
Biden reminded the mission
Addressing his former campaign team over the phone, Biden urged its members to ’embrace’ Vice President Kamala. He stressed that even though the name of the campaign team has been changed to ‘Harris Campaign’, its mission remains the same – to defeat Donald Trump. Biden was facing pressure to quit the presidential race since his poor performance in the debate with his Republican rival Donald Trump in June. Due to the ongoing speculation about his health, the demand to hand over the presidential candidature to someone else in his place had started gaining momentum in the Democratic Party.
‘I’m not going anywhere’
President Joe Biden told his former campaign team, “If I had not got COVID, I would have been sitting there with you, standing with you. COVID will keep me away from people for the next three-four days, but I am going to get into the field soon, I am not going anywhere.” Biden said, “COVID has kept me away for some time now, but I want people to remember that what we have done is incredible and we are going to do a lot more in the future.” He urged his former campaign team to embrace Kamala wholeheartedly, work together and defeat Trump.
‘Democracy needs to be saved’
Biden said, “We still need to save democracy. Trump is still a threat to the community. He is a threat to the country. Ask my foreign policy colleagues, my counterparts and people of the country and the world. I hope that like me, Kamala will also be supported with all her heart and soul.” (Language)
