Bengaluru: The Karnataka government on Friday decided to rename Ramanagara district as Bengaluru South. The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister HK Patil said, “We have decided to rename Ramanagara district as Bengaluru South… This has been done on the demand of the people there. The Revenue Department will initiate the process.”

‘Only the name of the district will change, everything else will remain the same’

Briefing reporters after a cabinet meeting chaired by the chief minister, Patil said, “Only the name of the district will change, all other names (of talukas) will remain the same.” He told reporters after the cabinet meeting, “Only the name of the district will change, everything else will remain the same.” Ramnagar town, located about 50 km from the capital Bengaluru, will remain the headquarters of Bengaluru South district. Responding to a question, he said, “The people of Ramnagar want to come under Brand Bengaluru. The people of the district and some prominent personalities are of the opinion that they want Brand Bengaluru.”

When asked if this decision has been taken keeping the elections in mind, Patil said, “This decision has not been taken keeping the elections in mind, it is based on the demand of the people and public representatives there.”

Union minister opposed the name change

At the same time, Union Minister and BJP MP Prahlad Joshi opposed this decision and said that this has proved that the Congress party and the Congress government are anti-Ram. Demanding the withdrawal of the proposal, he said that if the Karnataka government does not withdraw the proposal, the BJP will protest against it. Prahlad Joshi said, this shows that they are allergic to Ram and Ram temple, even they are quite allergic to the name of Ram. They used to do the same when we were building the Ram temple, but with the decision to change the name of Ramnagar, the Congress party and the Congress government have proved that they are against Ram.

Ramnagar is the home district of the Deputy CM

Ramnagar is the home district of Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar. He represents the Kanakapura Assembly constituency in the district and had first mooted the proposal in October last year.

Let us tell you that when Ramnagar district was created in August 2007, Union Minister and Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) leader HD Kumaraswamy was the Chief Minister of the JD-S-BJP coalition. Taking a dig at the proposal, Kumaraswamy had recently said that if he becomes the Chief Minister again, he will reverse this plan when it is implemented. Former Chief Minister Kumaraswamy had alleged that the purpose behind this proposal is to tap the real estate opportunities there. The proposal to rename Ramnagar district as Bengaluru South recently gained momentum when a delegation led by Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar met the Chief Minister and submitted a memorandum to raise the issue. Ramnagar district includes Ramnagar, Magadi, Kanakapura, Channapatna and Harohalli taluks.
