Chennai. Around 140 families from Kattupalli Kuppam area of Tiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu are still waiting for the permanent job they were promised. A group of victims’ families and senior citizens called on Chief Minister M.K. A complaint has been filed before Stalin. The families who earn their livelihood by fishing in the sea were given accommodation at a place about 2 km away from the nearest beach.
Even though the company had given an assurance in writing that one member of the family would be provided with a permanent job, but to no avail.
They were given appointments on temporary basis and were trained and given jobs in welding, fitting and crane operations.
Sajith Lal told -AnyTV News, “We were promised a permanent job by the company and the district administration supported it. Presently each of us is getting a nominal salary of Rs 16,000, while those doing the same work and others Those who are on permanent basis are getting three times our salary along with other benefits.”
Sajith said that his other employees have been on strike since February but the company and the district administration are not listening to him.
The affected family members said that the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) also did not listen to them properly and did not solve their problems.
Social activists raising the issue said that on the insistence of the company, a cooperative society of workers was formed in 2014 and through this society the government and workers are given employment.
Speaking to -AnyTV News, C. Rajeev, Director, Center for Policy and Development Studies said, “The government should not back down and take up the matter with the company concerned.”
Whoever owns the company, the government and the Tiruvallur district administration have a commitment to the fishermen and should provide all necessary assistance to provide permanent employment to at least one member of the fishermen’s family in Kattupalli Kuppam.
We are taking up the matter with the State Government and the Union Ministry of Shipping regarding this issue.
