Chennai. The Tamil Nadu Public Health Department, in collaboration with local bodies and the Department of School Education, will vaccinate 21.2 lakh children in the age group of 12-15 years. State Health Minister Ma Subramaniam said in a statement on Thursday that the school authorities and the health department should ensure that children are vaccinated only after obtaining consent forms from the parents.
The Minister said that due to the arrival of fresh and active cases of COVID-19 in the state, immunization of children can be done in schools only. He said that the state has been able to cover 84.5 per cent of children in the age group of 15-18 years as the state health department has been able to conduct massive vaccination drives in schools.
Speaking to -AnyTV News, Ma Subramaniam said, “The vaccines will be given free of cost, but will not be available at other government immunization centres. We have more than 21.6 lakh doses of the vaccine, which is more than the target.”
The minister also said that there are around 14 lakh elderly citizens above 60 years of age in the state who are eligible for a precautionary dose of the vaccine or booster dose.
Notably, until now people with a second illness over the age of 60 were eligible for the precautionary vaccine, but now vaccination is open to all elderly people.
