New Delhi. Scoring a century and taking 5 wickets in an ODI is very special in itself. Every all-rounder desires to accomplish this feat but only a few are able to succeed in it. In international cricket, great all-rounders like Kapil Dev, Ian Botham, Imran Khan, Richard Hadlee and Jacques Kallis have shone but none of them have been able to achieve this feat. So far in the nearly 53-year history of ODI cricket, four players have- Viv Richards of West Indies, Paul Collingwood of England, Rohan Mustafa of UAE and Bas de Leede of Netherlands have done the wonders of taking a century and 5 wickets in a single ODI.
Three Indian players – Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Yuvraj Singh also had a chance to achieve this feat but unfortunately despite coming very close to this record, they missed it.

Richards was the first to do this amazing thing
The feat of scoring a century and taking 5 wickets in a single ODI was first done by Viv Richards of West Indies. On March 18, 1987, in the Dunedin ODI against New Zealand, he took 5 wickets for 41 runs in 10 overs after scoring 119 runs in 113 balls with the help of 10 fours and four sixes. Part-time bowler Richards had dismissed John Wright, Jeff Crowe, Deepak Patel, Jeremy Cooney and Richard Hadlee during this period and was the player of the match. After Richards, England’s Paul Collingwood did this in the Nottingham ODI on 21 June 2005. In the match against Bangladesh, after scoring unbeaten 112 runs (86 balls, 19 fours), he took 6 wickets for 31 runs. Collingwood had dismissed Javed Umar, Md. Ashraful, Captain Habibul Bashar, Aftab Ahmed, Khaled Masood and Mashrafe Mortaza. Due to this performance he was the player of the match.
2 batsmen missed triple century by 1 run, one was out and the other… 12 cricketers stuck at 199 runs
De Leede of Netherlands did this feat only last year.
Almost 12 years after Collingwood’s achievement, ICC Associate Member, Rohan Mustafa of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) scored 109 runs (125 balls, seven fours and one six) against Papua New Guinea in the Abu Dhabi ODI on 4 April 2017. ) After giving away 25 runs, 5 batsmen of PNG were sent back to the pavilion. Last of all, Bas de Leede of Netherlands did this feat against Scotland in Bulawayo on 6 July 2023. In the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier match, he took 5 wickets for 52 runs in 10 overs and then played a special role in helping Netherlands reach the target of 278 in 42.5 overs by scoring 123 runs in 92 balls with the help of seven fours and five sixes. The match was won by Netherlands by 4 wickets and De Leede was the player of the match.

Three Indian players came close to the record but…

No Indian player has been able to achieve this feat till now. Despite coming close to this record, three players of Team India failed to achieve it, these include Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Yuvraj Singh. All these three players had taken four wickets after scoring a century in the same match but missed this record by one wicket. Sachin Tendulkar, after scoring 141 runs (128 balls, 13 fours and three sixes) in the quarter-finals of the Wills International Cup against Australia in Dhaka on 28 October 1998, hit four batsmen of the opposition team (Steve Waugh, Michael Bevan, Damien Martin and Brad Young) were returned to the pavilion. It seemed that the Master Blaster would make this special record but his chances were affected due to the run out of lower order Michael Kasprowicz. Sachin took 4 wickets for 38 runs in 9.1 overs in the match.
About five months later, Sourav Ganguly also proved unlucky in this matter. On March 22, 1999, in the Nagpur ODI against Sri Lanka, Sourav scored unbeaten 130 runs with the help of five fours and two sixes in 160 balls and then took four wickets for 21 runs. The condition of Yuvraj Singh also remained similar. ‘Yuvi’ scored a century of 118 runs with the help of 15 fours and two sixes in 122 balls in the ODI against England in Indore on 17 November 2008 and then Owais Shah, Matt Prior, Andrew Flintoff and Kevin Pietersen of the visiting team. Top batsmen were made victims. Unfortunately, his number of wickets was also limited to four.

Some other players of world cricket have also failed to make a place in this exclusive club despite coming close, these include Sanath Jayasuriya and Tillakaratne Dilshan of Sri Lanka, Chris Gayle of West Indies, Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez of Pakistan and Shakib Al Hasan of Bangladesh. Are. Like Sachin, Sourav and Yuvraj, the achievements of taking a century and four wickets in the same match are also recorded in the names of these players.
