The four year course is beneficial for the students in many ways and this course will also make it easier for them to study abroad. Now campuses of foreign universities will open in the country itself, there will be tie-ups between Indian and foreign universities. Those Indian universities which have a four-year course, they can easily tie-up with foreign universities and the path of students will be easier. Students who want to go abroad for post-graduation or other studies, they will also benefit from the four-year course because the admission route will be easier, and there will not be much difference between the studies in both the places. Global standard can be followed.
UGC Chairman Prof. M. Jagdish Kumar says that next year the number of universities implementing the four year course will be two to three times. The UGC has held discussions with several state governments who want to implement the four-year course. Along with this, UGC will also write to all the states about this.
The chairman says that the four year course is very beneficial for the students. UGC hopes that universities will implement this course on their own because in universities where this course will not be implemented, students will not be able to get the benefit of the new system. Universities and colleges must have PG programs to implement the four year course. Teachers should have research experience. Research culture should be given importance. He says that the state governments are also asking their universities to implement the four-year course.
Course will get new name
The UGC panel has suggested that Bachelor of Science degrees be offered from streams such as Arts, Management and Commerce. The four-year undergraduate degree program will be offered as a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree. Final regulations will be issued soon on the suggestions of the panel. Pro. Kumar says that this change is necessary if seen globally. BS degree can also be found in Arts, Commerce. The name of the degree should be in keeping with the global standard. The final regulations in this regard will come in a month or two. However, the university will have the option to offer BA Economics degree as well and also opt for BS Economics to come up with the global standard. It will not be just a change of name of the degree but students will get many benefits. If a student has earned the required credits, he can take the degree even before the deadline. This time, 105 higher education institutions of the country including DU, Aligarh Muslim University, Jammu University will start four-year undergraduate course from the new session. There are also 19 central universities in the country among the institutions that have started the four-year course. 40 Deemed Universities, 18 Private Universities and 22 State Universities have agreed to adopt this course.
NBT lens: University must adopt four year course
Of course UGC has not made the four year course compulsory but it is certain that sooner or later the universities will have to adopt the four year course. There are many reasons behind this. In the new education policy, tie-up between Indian and foreign universities is increasing and only those students who will be under the purview of the Four Year Scheme can get its benefit. Along with this, in view of the global standard, now the name of the degree is also being changed at the graduate level. In such a situation, this course will make the way easier for the students who want to go abroad and do post graduation. On the other hand, in universities where there will be a four-year course, students will also get to study advanced courses.
