Senior RSS leader Ram Madhav has reached the capital Colombo amid the ongoing controversy over awarding wind farm contracts to the Adani Group in Sri Lanka. At present, Madhav does not hold any official position in the government, but he went there and met the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Ranil Wickremesinghe, which has aroused curiosity in the minds of people that why did he go to Sri Lanka?
According to the information, Madhav went there to discuss how Sri Lanka can get more Indian investment and aid. However, it is not yet clear from whose side Madhav had gone there. In the midst of political and economic turmoil, India has tried to send a message that it will continue to help Sri Lanka even in these difficult circumstances.
Adani controversy in Sri Lanka
During the discussion on the Electricity Amendment Bill in the Sri Lankan Parliament, opposition from the Adani Group was seen from the opposition and some trade unions. During this, the opposition had accused the government of modifying the government-to-government level with the participation of the Adani Group to build a 500 MW wind farm on the country’s northern coast. However, this bill was passed amid protests and the government argued that it would help in speedy completion of renewable energy plans in the country.
After this, MCC Ferdinando Sarkar, head of the Ceylon Electricity Board, Sri Lanka’s state electricity supplier, has given the contract to Adani at the behest of the Indian government. The controversy escalated after he testified before a parliamentary panel that he was told by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa that PM Modi had pushed for a 500 MW wind energy project to the Adani Group. However, he later withdrew his statement saying that he had become emotional in the meeting, due to which he lied. He is taking back what he has said about Modi.
The country’s main opposition party Congress raised questions on the government regarding this. Congress leader Ragini Nayak has said that the leaders of the opposition in the country get summons immediately from the ED, but on behalf of the person of the Sri Lankan government it is claimed that a contract is given to the Adani group at the behest of the PM and ED does not investigate any of this, their assets reach lakhs and crores, on this they do not send any summons from ED.
