Agra. A group of students of the Government Industrial Training Institute (ITI) here created a ruckus on the campus over instructions to remove saffron scarves worn by students wearing burqa in protest. The institute has issued a notice, in which all the students have been directed to ‘come in the prescribed dress code only, otherwise their attendance will not be marked for the day’.
The principal of the institute, Nawab Singh said that there are set rules on dress for the students and everyone should follow them.
There are about 1,500 students, including 200 girls, of whom 20 are Muslims.
Harish Chandra, a senior faculty member, said, “On Monday, some students came to the college wearing a ‘gamchha’ (scarf) around their neck. When they were asked to remove it, they demanded a ban on girl students wearing burqa on the campus. “
He said that he removed his scarves after being assured of implementing the dress code.
Mohit Kumar, who joined the protest, said that he had informed the principal about the ‘violation of the dress code’, but no action was taken.
He said, “When I came to the institute wearing a saffron gamchha, the teachers objected and asked me to remove it. But I told them to first stop the students from wearing the burqa on the campus. They assured me that every student would follow the dress code. will follow.”
