Bangalore. With communal unrest and tension in the state and pangs of cabinet expansion, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai now has a challenge to handle the issue of assurance of reservation for the Panchamasali Lingayat community under the 2A category.
The Panchamasali saint Basavajay Mrityunjay Swamiji of Kudalasangam Math on Monday announced that the deadline given to the ruling BJP government has expired and he will launch the agitation from April 21. “We have been waiting for the fulfillment of the assurance of the BJP government in Karnataka for one-and-a-half years,” Swamiji said.
He explained, “Former chief minister BS Yediyurappa had promised to provide reservation by September, 2021. Believing in him, we withdrew the agitation. The promise was never fulfilled. In a changed political scenario, Basavaraj Bommai became the chief minister. And they asked for a period of 3 months. Unfortunately, there is no sign of progress with respect to reservation for Panchamasali Lingayat community.”
Again CM Bommai was given a deadline till April 14. Since, the demand has not been met, we are starting an agitation. We hope that the government will consider our petition during the agitation. If this fails, a state-wide agitation will be launched in front of the offices of the district commissioners. The agitation will continue in five phases to put pressure on the government.”
CM Bommai, who is busy handling the situation in the state in the backdrop of unrest, will remain confused over the issue. The issue of reservation is like moving a hornet’s nest in the present scenario. Backward class leaders have warned that they will not tolerate disturbances with the existing reservation pattern. Party sources said that the Kadu Gola and Kuruba communities have also started a massive agitation demanding reservation under the Scheduled Tribes category.
