Shimla. While announcing its candidate from Kangra Lok Sabha constituency, Congress on Tuesday decided to field senior party leader Anand Sharma from this seat. Sharma, who has been a member of Rajya Sabha, is contesting the Lok Sabha elections for the first time.
The Central Election Committee of the Congress on Tuesday evening announced the names of Anand Sharma and Satpal Raizada as party candidates from Kangra and Hamirpur seats. Now there will be a Brahmin versus Brahmin contest in Kangra parliamentary constituency because BJP has fielded state BJP vice president Rajeev Bhardwaj from this seat. Rajiv is the nephew of former Chief Minister Shanta Kumar.
Sharma was elected to the Rajya Sabha in the years 1984, 1994, 2010 and 2016 during his active political career spanning five decades. He served as the Union Commerce Minister from 2009 to 2014. Sharma has held the post of President of Youth Congress. He has also been the chairman and member of various standing committees of the Parliament. This is Sharma’s first Lok Sabha election.
