X user responded to those who questioned the impartiality of the Election Commission.
New Delhi: Five phases of voting have been completed in the Lok Sabha elections, which are called the grand festival of democracy in the country, while two phases of voting are still remaining. Meanwhile, the opposition is continuously raising questions on the impartiality of the Election Commission. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while answering Rajat Sharma’s questions in India TV’s superhit program ‘Salaam India’, talked about the impartiality of the Election Commission during the Congress regime. While answering questions during the biggest interview of the year, PM Modi had raised questions on stopping elections in the country after the assassination of former PM Rajiv Gandhi. After Prime Minister Modi’s statement, the debate on the impartiality of the Election Commission has intensified on social media.
User shared old paper cutting
A person named Akhilesh Mishra has made three tweets on the social media platform ‘X’. Along with this, Akhilesh Mishra has also shared cutouts of old newspapers. Akhilesh Mishra has written on X that ‘Election Commission rules state that if a candidate dies during the election, the election on that particular seat is canceled and the election is held at a later date. There is no rule to postpone the entire election for just one seat. Yet, this is exactly what was done when Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated in May 1991. The entire election was postponed for three weeks.’
Seven Chief Ministers protested
Akhilesh Mishra further writes that ‘at least seven Chief Ministers strongly opposed the postponement of the elections. Many called it a murder of democracy and the Constitution. Yet, the then CEC T.N. Seshan, who was a dynastic loyalist of the Congress, acted completely arbitrarily and postponed the elections. These three weeks were used by the Congress party to get sympathy votes. Before Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination, the Congress was heading towards a complete collapse. But the three-week postponement was used by the Congress party to take out processions. Funeral processions were taken out using Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi in advertisements. Essentially every trick was used to get sympathy votes. Because of all this, the result of the election changed completely.’
Congress got benefit in the elections
He wrote that ‘Seshan was later rewarded by the Congress and was made the Congress candidate against LK Advani. Many other CECs were similarly ‘corrupted’ by the Congress party. Before Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination, the Parliament was heading towards a hung assembly. The Congress party was heading towards defeat and the opposition, especially the BJP, was emerging as a strong contender for power. After Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination, the Congress party was given three weeks, completely unconstitutionally, to campaign and seek sympathy votes. All this factor worked and the election was completely overturned.’
