Rain and floods have caused devastation not only in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) but from Oman to Pakistan. 82 people have died in the three countries due to torrential rains and severe floods. Of these, 63 people have died in Pakistan, 18 in Oman and 1 in Dubai. 18 people have died due to floods caused by sudden heavy rains in Oman. While 2 people are missing. Their search is on. The death toll announced in Oman on Tuesday includes at least nine schoolchildren and their driver, whose vehicle was swept away by floodwaters in Samad Eshan on Sunday.
The National Committee for Emergency Management said rescue teams were still searching for the two missing people.
The government of Oman granted a day off to administrative staff in the public and private sectors due to poor weather conditions in several provinces, while remote work was recommended in other parts of the Sultanate. Residents were also urged to move to shelters if they felt they were in danger or were asked to do so by authorities. According to government media, Oman’s northern province of Ash Sharqiyah is most affected by the floods. Police and soldiers have been deployed here to evacuate citizens from flood affected areas. Similarly, there has been heavy rain in the United Arab Emirates. Airports and parts of major highways were flooded, bringing traffic to a standstill. Vehicles have been abandoned on many roads.
63 deaths so far due to floods and rains in Pakistan
According to officials in Pakistan, at least 63 people have lost their lives due to the continuous rain and extremely bad weather for the last four days. 14 people died due to lightning and heavy rain. Officials gave this information on Wednesday. Disaster Management Authority spokesperson Khurshid Anwar said that most of the deaths occurred in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province located in the northwest of Pakistan. Building collapses in the province killed 32 people, including 15 children and five women. Anwar said that dozens of people have been injured and 1370 houses have been damaged in the northwest. 21 people died in incidents of lightning and house collapse in Pakistan’s Punjab province.
While there is news of death of 10 people in Balochistan. Authorities have declared a state of emergency after the flash floods. Rescue and relief operations are continuing in Balochistan on Wednesday even though the threat of rain still remains. Zaheer Ahmed Babar, a senior official of Pakistan Meteorological Department, said that due to climate change, Pakistan is experiencing heavy rains in the month of April.
