Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has warned of big setbacks to Congress ahead of Rajya Sabha elections. He said that many Congress MLAs are going to join BJP. After the assembly elections of five states, the Rajya Sabha elections have come. Four out of five states (Uttar Pradesh, Manipur, Goa and Uttarakhand) have managed to remain in government. Whereas, in Punjab, the Aam Aadmi Party ousted the Congress from power.
According to news agency ANI, Sarma said, “Congress does not know how many of their MLAs are going to join BJP. Also, in the Rajya Sabha elections, the candidate is not bound to follow the whip issued in the party. According to this calculation, we will be successful in getting both the seats. “The BJP has fielded the holy Gogoi Margherita for the Rajya Sabha and has declared support for the UPPL candidate for the second seat,” he informed.
United Party Liberals candidate Rangwara Narjari is in the fray. Assam legislators will vote on two of the 13 Rajya Sabha seats that fell vacant in April. Apart from Assam, MLAs will also vote in Punjab, Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Tripura. The tenure of Congress Rajya Sabha MPs Rani Nara and Ripun Bora is coming to an end in Assam.
Here, the Congress has once again fielded Bora. “I am grateful to Hon’ble Congress President Sonia Gandhi and my leader Rahul Gandhi for re-nominating me as the party’s candidate for Rajya Sabha elections from Assam,” he said. Also, I want the blessings of all Congress leaders and workers. It was reported that Congress is in discussion with AIUDF for one of the two seats. In the assembly elections held last year, both the parties had fielded together.
