Bengaluru. Recalling a recent incident, CJI DY Chandrachud on Saturday said that he had to face criticism on social media for changing his posture on the chair due to some difficulty in sitting during the hearing. He said that judges have a lot of work and due to lack of time to take care of their families and themselves, they find it difficult to function properly.
The CJI said, ‘Managing stress and the ability to create a work-life balance is integral to delivering justice. Before you can heal the wounds of others, you must learn to heal your own wounds. This applies to judges also.
The CJI, after inaugurating the 21st Biennial State Level Conference of Judicial Officers in Bengaluru, shared a recent personal experience. The conference was organized by the Karnataka State Judicial Officers Association. He said that he was recently criticized during ‘live streaming’ of an important hearing.
Justice Chandrachud said, ‘Just four-five days ago when I was hearing a case, I was having a little pain in my back, so all I did was put my elbows on my chair in the court and I But changed my posture. He said several comments were made on social media alleging that the Chief Justice was so arrogant that he stood up in the middle of an important debate in the court.
The CJI said, ‘They did not tell you that what I did was only to change the posture on the chair. Doing judicial work for 24 years can be a bit laborious, which I have done. He said, ‘I did not go out of the court. I only changed my posture, but I had to face a lot of abuse, ‘trolling’, but I believe that our shoulders are very broad and the common people have full faith in us regarding our work.
In the context of (judges) not getting the same protection in Taluk courts as judges in the Supreme Court and High Courts, he recalled an incident in which a young civil judge was threatened by a member of the bar if he did not treat him properly. If you don’t behave with him, he will get him transferred. Work-life balance and stress management were among the topics of the two-day conference.
Regarding this, the Chief Justice said that the ability to manage stress is important in the life of a judge. He said that many people who come to the courts remain stressed because of the injustice done to them. He said, ‘As the Chief Justice, I have seen many lawyers and litigants cross their limits while talking to us in the court. When these litigants cross the limit, the answer is not to use the power of contempt (of the court), but it is important to understand why they crossed this limit.
