According to a State Election Commission (SEC) official, the Trinamool Congress has won in Kanthi municipality, considered a stronghold of Leader of Opposition in the Assembly and Nandigram MLA Shubhendu Adhikari. At the same time, in the politics of the hills of North Bengal, the newly formed ‘Hamro Party’ has captured the Darjeeling municipality by defeating Trinamool Congress, Gorkha Janmukti Morcha and BJP.

Although both the parties have won some wards. Trinamool Congress has reduced the opposition to zero by registering victory on all the wards in 27 municipalities.
“No party has got a clear majority in the four municipalities,” a state election commission official said. These include Beldanga of Murshidabad, Jhalda of Purulia district, Champadani in Hooghly district and Igra municipality of East Medinipur and the role of independents who won from here has become important. West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool supremo Mamata Banerjee thanked the people for this unprecedented victory and advised the winning candidates and supporters to act with humility.
Kanthi municipality has been a stronghold of the officer family for four decades
Trinamool has dealt a big blow to Shubhendu Adhikari and his family by registering victory in Kanthi municipality, which has been a stronghold of the Adhikari family for four decades. Shishir Adhikari, the father of Leader of Opposition Adhikari, was the President of Kanthi Municipality from 1971 to 2009 (except once in 1981-86). After becoming an MP, he handed over this responsibility to his son Dibyendu Adhikari. When Dibyendu Adhikari became an MP after winning the 2016 Lok Sabha by-election, he entrusted this responsibility to his younger brother Soumendu.
