A special drive was launched by the Customs of Mumbai to destroy over 600 kg of narcotic substances and over one crore foreign cigarettes.
The customs department in Maharashtra’s capital Mumbai on Wednesday launched a special operation to destroy over 600 kg of narcotics and over one crore foreign cigarettes worth around Rs 500 crore. An official gave information about this campaign. Principal Commissioner of Customs (Zone-3) Rajesh Sanan said that the drugs destroyed include 293 kg of heroin and 50 kg of mephedrone, with a total market value of around Rs 500 crore. In addition, more than one crore foreign cigarettes weighing 19 metric tonnes worth about Rs 15 crore were also destroyed.
The narcotics seized in various anti-trafficking operations were destroyed as per the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. In a statement issued by Customs, it has been said that various concerned agencies have completed the investigation as well as legal formalities in all these cases. The destruction of these items was done under the supervision of a high level drug disposal committee and in the presence of representatives of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence and Narcotics Control Bureau.
