Shaheen Afridi: After the ODI World Cup 2023, Pakistani team captain Babar Azam had given up the captaincy of all three formats. After this, Shan Masood has been made the captain of Test and Shaheen Afridi has been made the captain of T20 format. The Pakistani team could not perform well under Afridi’s captaincy. The team suffered a 4-1 defeat against New Zealand. Now Shaheen Afridi’s captaincy is in danger, as Babar Azam has once again been offered the white ball captaincy.
Big danger looms on Shaheen Afridi
According to a report by EPSNcricinfo, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi had met Babar earlier this week to make the offer. Babar Azam has not yet accepted this proposal. He has asked the PCB to appoint him as captain in all three formats if he is to consider a comeback. Right now no one has been appointed captain of the Pakistani team after Babar.
Decision will be taken after training with the army
PCB Chief Mohsin Naqvi said in a press conference in Lahore that the final decision will be taken after the training camp with the Army. After which Shaheen Afridi’s captaincy is in danger. Recently, his team Lahore Qalandars did not perform well in the Pakistani Super League and the team stood at the last position. After this his captaincy was also criticized. PCB Chief Naqvi also said that Pakistan wanted a long-term captain whom they could support.
Under the captaincy of Babar Azam, the Pakistani team reached the final of the T20 World Cup 2022, but the team had to face defeat against England. At present, apart from captaincy, there is a tussle going on in Pakistani cricket regarding the selector also. The PCB has worked with several chief selectors since the start of 2023. Recently, PCB had abolished the post of Chief Selector and had equalized the powers of all the selectors.
