New Delhi. The recent mayor election in Chandigarh has created a lot of controversy, there are reports that the newly elected mayor Manoj Sonakar may resign from his post before the next hearing of the Supreme Court. This news has come at a time when there is speculation about three opposition councilors joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which may deal a blow to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The councilors who are rumored to be joining BJP include Poonam, Neha Musawat and Gurucharan Singh Kala.
The possibility of Mayor Manoj Sonakar’s resignation amid the ongoing political turmoil regarding the Chandigarh Mayor elections has surprised people. Congress and AAP have alleged irregularities in BJP’s victory, following which the Supreme Court had to intervene and hearings are underway regarding electoral malpractices. The BJP aims to strengthen its position by inducting three AAP councilors to increase its numbers in the council.
Furthermore, there is speculation that if there is a re-election for mayor, the BJP will not nominate Manoj Sonakar again. According to sources, the BJP is in constant touch with several councilors of AAP and Congress, possibly with the aim of convincing them to switch sides. A hearing on the mayor election is to be held in the Supreme Court on Monday, which will further intensify BJP’s efforts to garner support from opposition councillors.
