Meerut. A joint team of police, measurement department, pollution board and other departments raided a meat factory owned by former minister and BSP leader Haji Yakub Qureshi. SP (Rural) Keshav Mishra said, “The raids were conducted following complaints that the license of the factory was expired, but the processing/packaging of meat was still going on. We’re assessing the legal situation.”
Sources said that the raids ended late on Thursday. The sample of suspected ‘cow meat’ found in the factory has been sent for investigation.
The factory located on Hapur Road, Al Fahim Meatex Pvt Ltd, exports packaged meats to the Middle East and other countries.
Haji Yakub’s son Imran Qureshi said he was out of town and did not know much about the raid. However, he claimed that no illegal work had taken place in the factory.
“Some of the meat packets got damaged while being transferred and were being repackaged,” he said.
BSP leader Haji Yakub contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and lost to his nearest rival Rajendra Agarwal of BJP by a narrow margin.
He was a minister in the BSP government in UP and came into limelight after the announcement of a reward on the head of a Danish cartoonist who made a caricature of Prophet Mohammad in 2006.
