An official said that currency notes were distributed during the election campaign of Congress’ Virudhar Nagar candidate Manickam Tagore for the Lok Sabha elections. In a video clip shared on social media, Manickam Tagore was seen allegedly distributing cash to people present at an election campaign event in Virudhunagar. Superintendent of Police BK Arvind said that the video clip of Congress candidate Manickam Tagore distributing cash in Madurai is genuine. Earlier on Wednesday, Tagore had addressed party supporters and locals during an election campaign in Madurai.
Statement given on PM Modi’s visit to Tamil Nadu
While talking to the media, Tagore praised the Congress manifesto for the 7 phase Lok Sabha elections which has been named ‘Nyaya Patra’ and said, “There is tremendous energy among the people here in this program of ‘Mahalakshmi’. . Our manifesto talks about the people. People are responding positively to our ‘Nyaya Patra’.” On Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Tamil Nadu, Tagore said that despite his visit to the southern state, Tamil Nadu stands with Chief Minister MK Stalin. Tagore said, “No matter how many times PM Modi visits our state, he will continue to be rejected by Tamils. Tamil Nadu stands with CM MK Stalin and his aim of winning all the Lok Sabha seats in the state will be achieved.”
It is noteworthy that in the first phase of Lok Sabha elections, voting will be held on all 39 seats of Tamil Nadu on April 19. In the 2019 general elections, the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance, comprising Congress, VCK, MDMK, CPI, CPI(M), IUML, MMK, KMDK, TVK and AIFB, won a landslide victory on 38 out of 39 seats.
