Thiruvananthapuram. Veteran Kerala Congress leader Thelekunnil Bashir passed away at his residence on Friday morning. He was 79 years old. Bashir, known as the “soft face” of the party, had been confined to his home for the past few years due to his ill health.
He was also a two-time Lok Sabha member, having served one term in the Upper House and winning the state assembly.
Bashir, the brother-in-law of Kerala’s evergreen actor Prem Nazir, took oath as Chief Minister in 1977 after K. In place of Karunakaran, A.K. Antony had to resign from his assembly seat to contest the elections.
Apart from being an MLA, he had also held key positions in the party including the party’s Kerala unit vice-president and the party’s Thiruvananthapuram unit president.
His last rites will be performed on Saturday and before that his body will be kept in various offices for party workers to pay tribute to him.
