Lok Sabha Election 2024: Now only a few days are left for voting in the Lok Sabha elections. The first phase of voting, which will be held in a total of seven phases, will begin on April 19. Voting will be held in the last phase on June 1 and the results of the votes will come on June 4. Meanwhile, political activities have started gaining momentum. This time the contest on Jorhat seat of Assam is expected to be very interesting. At present this seat is with BJP. But Congress has made the contest interesting by giving ticket to Gaurav Gogoi from this seat.
Congress has won 10 times so far
In fact, out of the total 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam, one seat is from Jorhat. This Lok Sabha seat came into existence in 1957. Congress had got success on this seat in the very first elections. Since then this seat was considered the stronghold of Congress. So far, out of 14 Lok Sabha elections on this seat, Congress has won 10 elections and BJP has won only two elections. BJP won the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Jorhat is famous for tea production
Jorhat is the second important city of Assam after Guwahati. Talking about its history, it was the last capital of the Ahom Empire. Some historical monuments of that time are also present here. Jorhat is also famous for tea production. Along with Tinsukia and Dibrugarh, tea is also produced on a large scale in Jorhat.
Jorhat Lok Sabha seat has been a stronghold of Congress
If we look at the electoral history of Jorhat, in the first Lok Sabha elections in 1957, Ahmed Mofida of Congress had won from this seat. But in 1962, Congress had to face defeat from this seat. After this, in the 1967 Lok Sabha elections, Congress once again made a comeback and won this seat. Congress has held this seat continuously since 1967. In 1984, this seat went out of the hands of Congress. In the 1991 elections, Congress once again won this seat. Jorhat seat was held by Congress from 1991 to 2009. The picture changed in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Lotus blossomed on this seat in the wave of Modi. Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Kamakhya Prasad won this seat. After this, in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP made Tapan Gogoi its candidate and he won this seat.
2014 election results
For the first time in the 2014 elections, Bharatiya Janata Party got success on this seat. In 2014, BJP gave ticket to Kamakhya Prasad from this seat. Kamakhya Prasad got a total of 4,56,420 votes. Whereas Congress’s Bijay Krishna Handik got a total of 3,54,000 votes. CPI candidate Draupada Borgon stood third, getting a total of 28,930 votes.
2019 election results
Bharatiya Janata Party fielded Tapan Kumar Gogoi as its candidate in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. This time the party got the benefit of changing the candidate. Tapan Kumar Gogoi defeated the rival Congress candidate. Tapan Kumar Gogoi got a total of 5,43,288 votes while Congress’ Sushant Borgohain got a total of 4,60,635 votes.
