New Delhi. On the one hand, new laws are being brought in the country to give equality to transgender people. At the same time, exercising those rights, the people of this community are occupying high positions and bringing glory to the country. Taking forward this campaign of development of the country, Adam Harry has become the first transgender of India. But still he is also worried about whether his dream of flying a plane will be fulfilled or not. Adam, 23, is worried because the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) says that “a person who is taking hormonal therapy (female-to-male therapy) cannot be hired to fly a plane.” ‘ However, the DGCA also says that there is no restriction on transgenders to become pilots. He only told Harry that ‘to obtain a commercial pilot’s license, he would have to reapply for the medical test’. Harry currently holds a private pilot’s license. But on the other hand, Harry says that the DGCA’s point is a bit confusing, because they have clearly said that a ‘person who is taking ‘hormonal replacement therapy’ cannot be allowed to fly the plane.’
For this, when the DGCA officials asked Harry to stop taking hormonal therapy, Harry decided to go to South Africa to take admission in the training school. According to Harry, ‘Transgenders have to take hormonal therapy for life. It cannot be stopped by any means. Whereas officials in India say that if you want to get a license, then you have to stop taking hormonal therapy for this. It is worth noting that in the year 2019, Harry took admission in ‘Rajiv Gandhi Academy of Aviation Technology’, in which the state government helped him. But the DGCA refused to give him a medical certificate after conducting a medical examination. But he is also happy that ‘there is no ban on transgenders becoming pilots in India, but it has not been clarified. There are some things a bit confusing in this as well.
Let me tell you, Harry wants to fly a plane in India as a commercial pilot as a male, for which he is fighting. Kerala’s Higher Education Minister R. Bindu, while reacting to the matter, has said that ‘Adam is facing a big tragedy. The system existing to help transgenders is not enough.
