New Delhi. Irfan Habib, who has been a target of people as a leftist historian, has now accepted that the temples in Kashi and Mathura were demolished by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb and mosques were built there. Habib said that yes, Aurangzeb had demolished the temples of Mathura and Kashi. History has been written till the date the temples were demolished. Let me tell you that Irfan Habib was in the discussion with his statements in the Babri and Ram Janmabhoomi dispute in Ayodhya. He denied then that Babur built a mosque in Ayodhya by demolishing the temple at Ram Janmabhoomi.
Irfan Habib said that the temple of Varanasi was also destroyed by Aurangzeb and the temple of Mathura is also included in the same list. He said that Raja Veer Singh Bundela had built a big temple during the reign of Jahangir at Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi in Mathura. Habib said that in those days all the temples were destroyed by Aurangzeb, in which the temples of Kashi and Mathura are prominent. Irfan said that there is no such thing which is not in history. Still the question is, how far back do you want to go? He said that Aurangzeb did a wrong thing by destroying the temples.
Irfan Habib also said that the thing which was made in 1669, can it be broken now? He said that doing so would be against the Memorial Act. Irfan Habib also said that whatever temples were demolished, their stones were planted in mosques. On the Gyanvapi issue, he said that now Shivling is being talked about, but in the earlier application given in the court, there was no talk of Shivling.
