New Delhi. The Delhi High Court has directed the Delhi Police to start the work of removing unauthorized people living in the slums and dharamshalas built in the Kalkaji temple complex from Thursday.
Justice Pratibha M Singh in the High Court, after hearing the case, ordered that Navratri is starting from April 2, due to which it has become more necessary to remove the illegal occupation.
He said that lakhs of devotees visit the temple during Navratri and the administration has to make proper arrangements for their entry and exit.
The High Court said, in such a situation, the continuing occupation of slums and dharamshalas is a threat to the safety of these devotees.
Significantly, on March 22, the High Court had said that about 40 families are living in the slums and dharamshalas built in the temple premises. They may lack proper resources and the matter needs to be looked at with empathy.
The High Court, however, said that the illegal occupants have made it clear that they will neither vacate the place nor will they consider the option of taking the house on rent, buying a house or going to a night shelter. In such a situation, the court is left with no option and it directs the Delhi Police to do the work of removing the illegal possession.
The High Court has said that the administration can use appropriate force to remove 142 people living in slums built in the temple premises and 46 people living in dharamshalas.
The administration said that 20 shopkeepers have given Rs 30,000 for allotment of temporary shops and kiosks.
