Lok Sabha Elections 2024: The first phase of voting in the Lok Sabha elections 2024 has been completed and preparations for the second phase are also complete. Voting is to be held in seven phases for 543 Lok Sabha seats in the country. Meanwhile, South Central seat of Mumbai remains a topic of discussion in Maharashtra politics. There is a contest between two factions of Shiv Sena on this seat. Uddhav Thackeray has given ticket to Anil Desai here. At the same time, Eknath Shinde has made sitting MP Rahul Shewale the candidate. Congress and BJP have not fielded candidates here because both the parties are part of different alliances. Shinde has given ticket to Rahul on behalf of NDA and Uddhav has given ticket to Anil on behalf of INDIA alliance of opposition parties.
This seat remains in the news because there is a direct contest between the two factions of Shiv Sena. For the first time after the split in Shiv Sena, candidates from both the parties are contesting against each other. The fight for Mumbai South Central will decide who is the real heir of Balasaheb’s party Shiv Sena and who will carry forward his political legacy.
Shewale is the current MP
Rahul Shewale is the current MP from this seat. In 2019, he defeated Congress’s Eknath Gaikwad by 1.5 lakh votes. He had also become MP from the same seat in 2014. However, now the situation has changed. After the split in Shiv Sena, it remains to be seen who the Maratha voters will side with. On this basis the victory and defeat of both the candidates will be decided. If both get Marathi votes then Shewale may get the advantage of being a Dalit.
What are the equations?
There are six assembly constituencies in this parliamentary constituency and four of them have MLAs from the NDA alliance, while two are held by the INDIA alliance. Mumbai South Central seat, which has more than 14 lakh voters, has 42 percent Marathi voters. In terms of caste equation, 28 percent voters are Dalits. 20 percent are Muslims. Here 10 percent voters are from North India and 8.50 percent voters are from South India. This seat came into existence in 2008 and in 2009, Eknath Gaikwad of Congress became MLA from here. Since then Rahul Shewale has been becoming MP from here.
Anil may increase Shewale’s problems
This election will not be easy for sitting MP Rahul Shewale. He has the support of four MLAs, who will campaign in his favor in their areas. Voting on this seat is to be held in the fifth phase on May 20. In this context, the campaign time is also very long, but Anil can get the votes here in the name of Uddhav Thackeray. While Rahul has the advantage of being a Dalit, Anil has the trump card of people’s sympathy towards Uddhav. If the voters of the opposition alliance unite and vote for Anil and he is able to make a dent in the Maratha vote bank, then his victory will be almost certain.
