Nepal’s Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, who is trying to get parliamentary approval for this agreement, has got relief from the stand of the opposition Communist Party of Nepal (UML). The Democratic Socialist Party has only 13 members in the House of Representatives.
The Democratic Socialist Party is one of the five parties in the ruling coalition. The two communist parties in the coalition still remain against the proposal. The Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre) and the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Socialists) have reiterated that they will vote against the resolution in the House. Similar is the attitude of the Janata Samajwadi Party.
Oli assures US embassy
Meanwhile, the news related to the activation of the US Embassy in Nepal is very much discussed here. On Wednesday, the US ambassador held talks with opposition leader and former prime minister KP Sharma Oli. After meeting him, Oli called on Prime Minister Deuba. It is said that due to the activities of the US Embassy, the opposition to the MCC agreement is increasing in a section of Nepalese politics. Whereas, according to UML sources, Oli has assured the US Embassy that his party will cooperate with the government in getting the MCC agreement approved.
The issue is about getting financial assistance of $ 500 million from MCC. An agreement was signed for this in 2017. But it has not been implemented till date, because the process of parliamentary approval required for this has not been completed. Now MCC has set the deadline of February 28 to complete this process.
UML sticks to its old stand
The US ambassador also discussed with Oli the possibility of an alliance between his Communist Party of Nepal (UML) and the Nepalese Congress, according to a report quoting sources in the newspaper Kathmandu Post. After that Oli went to meet Deuba. This was his second meeting with the Prime Minister within a week. After the meeting, a leader of the UML party said- ‘The Prime Minister sought our support for the approval of the MCC agreement. We asked the Prime Minister to create a conducive environment for us to attend the Parliament meeting. UML has been obstructing parliamentary proceedings for the last five months.
Gyanendra Bahadur Karki, Minister of Communications and Information Technology in the Deuba government, told media persons that Deuba was trying to get the MCC agreement approved. He told Oli that he should support it. Karki said – UML sticks to its old stand. Oli said that the UML will not allow Parliament to function until the Speaker is removed or the Speaker takes action against the 14 MPs. But Nepali Congress sources have told media persons that except the demand for the speaker’s removal, Deuba and Oli have agreed on all other issues.
