New Delhi/Thiruvananthapuram. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking cancellation of the bail granted by the Karnataka High Court to Binish Kodiyeri, son of CPI(M) state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan. Binish was in jail for a year and was granted conditional bail by a bench of the Karnataka High Court in October last year.
He was arrested by the Bengaluru division of ED under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and from 29 October 2020, he was in Bengaluru jail till he was granted bail on 28 October, 2021.
Anoop Mohammad, a close aide of Binish, was earlier caught by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and jailed in Bengaluru and after his arrest, Binish was interrogated and later arrested.
After getting bail, his lawyer said that Binish is in the business of vegetables and fish.
He was asked to show the accounts of business exceeding Rs 5 crore in the last 7 years. The ED said that it does not even come to Rs 1 crore annually.
Stating that he has not yet given conclusive evidence on the source of his funds, the probe agency has now filed a fresh plea for cancellation of his bail on the ground that certain observations in his bail are affecting the trial in the case. , in which the High Court failed. Besides this, some of his associates are yet to come for questioning.
In late 2020, following his son’s arrest, just before the local body elections, Balakrishnan was discharged for his medical treatment, as the CPI-M found it difficult to defend his son’s actions.
A year later, after his son got bail, Balakrishnan was brought back as secretary in December last year and was re-elected to a third and last three-year term at a state party convention in February.
But the news of ED’s move came on Saturday when the 23rd party Congress, which started on 6 April, is on the verge of ending in Kannur on Sunday. Balakrishnan is one of the main organizers of the event.
