new Delhi . A no-confidence motion against the government has been moved in Pakistan’s National Assembly and now the opposition appears united and strong to oust Prime Minister Imran Khan.
The math for taking out the mine is simple. To oust PM Khan, the opposition will have to gather the magic number of 172 MPs.
Following the decision of Jamhoori Watan Party’s Shahzain Bugti to walk out of the ruling coalition on Sunday, the strength of the ruling party in the 342-member lower house of Parliament has gone up to 178. With this the opposition has the support of 163 members, which is only 9 less than the required number.
Later, on Monday, Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), an ally of the ruling Pakistan-Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, announced that it was joining the opposition over a no-confidence motion against the PM.
The parliamentary leader of Khalid Magasi’s BAP has announced to leave the ruling coalition in the National Assembly in a joint press conference with stalwarts from the Pakistani political spectrum.
Big names include Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly and PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif, former President Asif Ali Zardari, PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, PDM president and JUIF chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and BNP-Mengal chairman Sardar Akhtar Mengal. Huh.
Four of the five BAP MPs, including Khalid Magasi, Israr Tareen, Ehsanullah Reki and Rubina Irfan, have announced that they are joining the opposition parties. This would mean that only five more MPs need to switch sides for Khan’s departure.
Acknowledging the decisive role of Baloch, opposition leader Shahbaz Sharif said, Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif promised that after the success of the no-confidence motion, the new government would work to solve the problems of Balochistan. “We will fully cooperate with BAP to resolve the problems in Balochistan. We will work sincerely for the people of Balochistan,” he said.
With Khan’s stars weakening, apart from Baloch, Sharif could make a full comeback. Shehbaz Sharif is likely to become the prime minister if the no-confidence motion against Khan is passed. This could open the door for Maryam Nawaz, a rising star on the Pakistani political horizon, to enter the corridors of power. Apart from this, the stars of senior Sharif i.e. former Pakistani PM Nawaz Sharif, who is facing the pain of forced exile in London, can shine. He may return to his homeland again in the new possible circumstances, provided he manages to strike a mutually acceptable understanding with the mighty Army Chief, Qamar Javed Bajwa.
With Prime Minister Khan apparently calling for fresh elections, the prospects of dissolution of the House do not appear to be positive. But this would have been possible only if he had stepped in for dissolution before Shehbaz Sharif moved a no-confidence motion in the National Assembly on Monday. Now that the no-confidence motion is doing its bit, with proceedings slated to begin on March 31, Khan has lost his opportunity to directly reach out to the people for support.
The opposition has already sensed the power of Shahbaz Sharif. According to The News International, during an opposition parliamentary meeting before moving the no-confidence motion, former President Zardari addressed Sharif as ‘prime minister’.
