New Delhi/Jaipur. Ahead of next year’s assembly elections in Rajasthan, former chief minister Vasundhara Raje is trying to re-establish herself as the face of the BJP there. She is meeting the party’s central leadership including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and is participating in party programs. Raje is currently the National Vice President of the Bharatiya Janata Party and has been seen in several programs including the swearing-in ceremonies of the governments of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand in Lucknow and Dehradun respectively. There is speculation in the saffron camp that Raje is trying to re-establish himself as the party’s face in Rajasthan by his presence at party functions.
Raje had not attended many programs of the BJP Rajasthan unit in the past citing various reasons. But in the last one week, Raje met Prime Minister Modi, BJP chief JP Nadda, some senior Union ministers during the second part of the ongoing budget session of Parliament.
A senior party official said the former chief minister is now actively trying to regain her position as the face of the BJP in Rajasthan.
He said, “After the BJP’s defeat in the 2018 Rajasthan Assembly elections, Raje was sidelined by the party leadership after he was accused of running a parallel organization for self-promotion instead of the party. Now present at party events. Vikar Raje is trying to send a message that she is active and relevant. She is also meeting the central leadership to win confidence ahead of next year’s assembly elections.”
The battle over the party’s faces for next year’s elections has begun and all camps have started claiming to lead the BJP in the 2023 Rajasthan Assembly elections.
Raje’s differences with Rajasthan BJP president Satish Poonia is an open secret in the state. A party insider said the former chief minister still has a strong influence in the Rajasthan unit and is now trying to iron out her differences with the central leadership ahead of the assembly elections due in late 2023.
“There is no doubt that he is one of the strongest leaders in the party’s Rajasthan unit, having influence across the state. His participation in party activities will help the party in the next year’s assembly elections,” he said. It is not clear whether he has the support of the central leadership or not.”
