New Delhi. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said on Thursday that the sales of Electric Vehicles (EVs) have seen a growth of 162 percent this year.
The Union Minister, while answering a question during the Question Hour in Lok Sabha, told the House that there has been a spurt in the sale of EVs on an annual basis.
He said that on category basis, there has been a growth of 423 percent in two-wheeler EV sales, 75 percent in three-wheeler EVs and 238 percent in four-wheeler EVs. The sales of buses have increased by 1,250 percent.
The Union Minister informed that as on March 13 this year, 10,95,746 EVs are registered in the country and 1,742 charging stations are operational.
Gadkari said that about 85 percent lithium-ion batteries are being manufactured in the country. Standards have been set for this and if any manufacturer does not manufacture according to the set standard, then action will be taken against him.
He said that the government is emphasizing on using clean energy for charging EVs. The policy of the government is to give importance to all new research so that new startups can be made more affordable for the customers.
Gadkari said that NHAI is developing charging stations at every 40 km and efforts are being made to use wind and solar energy for this.
