Expansion
Last year the EU adopted the Indo-Pacific strategy. The goal of this policy was to increase its activities in the region. Through this policy, the EU seeks to deepen engagement with its partners in the Indo-Pacific region to respond to the emerging dynamics affecting regional stability.
‘The Indo-Pacific region has been involved in history for many centuries’
Speaking on the topic ‘Earth and water: the conflicting politics of Eurasia and the Indo-Pacific’, Fontelles said, ‘When we talk of the emergence of the Indo-Pacific, the EU believes that this evolution is not new. The Indo-Pacific region has been in history for many centuries.
Noting that we live in a supposedly accelerated economy, Fontelles said it is imperative that navigation routes in the region be kept free. That is why we have prepared this Indo-Pacific strategy because we fully agree that the history of mankind in this century should be written in the Indo-Pacific region.
‘European Union was also present in the Indo-Pacific in the past’
Asked how the EU is preparing to deal with disputed demands in Europe and the Indo-Pacific, Fontelles reminded how European powers were present in the Indo-Pacific in the past. He said, ‘We were present in this part of the world many years ago. We want to come back because we know our future depends on it.
Fontelles said that we understand very well that our future largely depends on partnerships with countries in the Indo-Pacific region. It includes not only China but all other countries. We want to build partnerships in this area the same way we built the European Union.
