Pakistan’s Federal Minister Fawad Chaudhry said on Saturday that a vote on a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan’s government could be held next week. Let us tell you that the proceedings of the National Assembly (NA) session of Pakistan began today on the no-confidence motion against the government. The election of the new leader of the house has started today. The ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has chalked out its strategy to disrupt proceedings and delay polling by directing lawmakers to deliver lengthy speeches on a “foreign conspiracy”, Geo News reported.
Speaking to Geo News, the Minister of Information and Law said that the Foreign Secretary will brief the House on the “threat letter”, so a vote of no-confidence cannot take place. It can be postponed till next week.
According to sources, the PTI-led government plans not to vote on the no-confidence motion today, despite the court’s orders. He said the PTI members of the National Assembly have been directed to hold “long debates during the NA session”. Hence the polling can be postponed due to paucity of time.
In a historic decision a day earlier, Pakistan’s Supreme Court ordered National Assembly Speaker Asad Kasir to convene a session on Saturday to allow him to vote on a no-confidence motion against the premier. The National Assembly was also reinstated after the Supreme Court of Pakistan declared the government’s decision to dissolve the assembly and Qasim Suri, the vice-president of the NA, against the constitution.
On the other hand, the National Assembly Secretariat urged the members that the vote on the no-confidence motion against PM Imran Khan should be held today, otherwise the speaker may be charged with contempt of court. According to a Geo News report, voting on the no-confidence motion is at the fourth position in the six-point agenda of NA released on Friday.
A day earlier, PTI’s political committee had suggested that the party should submit mass resignations from assemblies at the Centre, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The suggestion came during a meeting of the Political Committee of PTI chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan. Sources said the current political situation in the country was discussed in the meeting and it was discussed whether to make public the “threat letter” of the alleged foreign conspiracy.
