Suman Karthik, Kilpal. On the occasion of Mahashivratri, there was an influx of faith in the Shiva temple located in Kodnar of Bastanar block of Bastar district. Situated on the National Highway, this Shiva temple is such where a Thanedar is always remembered during the worship on Mahashivratri. This temple is not very old, but it is discussed because there were constant obstacles in its construction. The temple remained incomplete even after several attempts. Sometimes those who took the responsibility of its construction ran away and sometimes they lost their lives due to accidents.
Later a sub-inspector Durgesh Sharma came to Kodnar police station. He decided to build a temple. Took a meeting of the villagers and started the construction of the temple. As soon as the construction of the temple started, Durgesh also became a victim of severe jaundice. He remained in the hospital for 15 days in serious condition. This superstition had become strong in the village that bad would happen to anyone who thinks of building a temple. Even after this, Durgesh did not back down from cooperating in the construction of the temple. He returned from the hospital recovering and was promoted to the post of Inspector as soon as the temple was built. He became in-charge of Parpa police station in Jagdalpur.
At present, Durgesh Sharma is the Thanedar in Korba. When the villagers come to worship in the Shiva temple on Mahashivratri, they are definitely discussed. The Bhoomi Pujan of the temple of Kodnar was done in 1990. Villagers told that a contractor of Jagdalpur had then taken up the work of construction of Kodnar police station and police quarters. The said contractor has also been described as a senior journalist of Bastar. The contractor took a meeting of the villagers and said that I am going here after doing such a big work, so before leaving, I will do something for the village which will be a sign. This was the period of the temple movement in Ayodhya. The foundation of the temple was laid but the contractor left without doing the work. After this the work of the temple was stalled for many years.
myth that people die
There is a superstition attached to the temple of Kodnar that whoever takes interest in its construction dies. Two years after the departure of the contractor, a Mauni Baba came from Ayodhya to Vijay Prasad, the owner of the big hotel located there. He wrote to Vijay and told that his pledge is to build 25 Shiva temples. A Shiva temple is being built in Dantewada. Have to make one more. Then Vijay told them that the work of digging the foundation of the Shiva temple here has been abandoned.
Mouni Baba called a meeting of the villagers and started the construction of a bigger size temple than before. However, due to the increase in size, the dispute also arose that there is Gramin Bank land. Still the work started with the efforts of the villagers, but then Mouni Baba died in a road accident. Temple work stopped. When the villagers inquired, they came to know that some children, who were disciples of Mouni Baba, live in Dantewada. Those children performed the last rites of Baba.
After this it came to know that Baba has some money which he has asked to be used for the construction of the temple. The children gave that money to Yogendra Singh Chauhan, a resident of Nakulnar, an acquaintance of Baba. Chauhan started the construction of the temple as per Baba’s orders, but a few days later he died of a heart attack. After this, there was a fear in the minds of the people that whoever goes to build the temple will be unlucky with him.
10 years stopped work
After two deaths, the temple construction work was stalled for ten years. Hotel owner Vijay Prasad had resolved to fulfill Mouni Baba’s wish. He started construction again after 10 years. As the work began, the chief mason fell from the roof and broke his leg. After this, all the masons and laborers ran away from work out of fear. Vijay also conceded defeat. Meanwhile, a station in-charge Chauhan came to Kodnar police station. He called a meeting to build the temple and the very next day his transfer order came. In 2017, Sub Inspector Durgesh Sharma started work again. He too fell seriously ill but he broke the myth that there was something inauspicious in building a temple. The temple was built and their promotion was also done immediately.
