Mumbai: A police inspector has been arrested in a case registered in South Mumbai in connection with extortion extortion from Angadia (traditional courier service). Police Inspector Om Wangte was arrested on Thursday by the Crime Intelligence Unit of Mumbai Police’s crime branch, an official said on Friday. This is the third arrest in this case.
The official said Wangte had earlier applied for anticipatory bail in the sessions court and also approached the Bombay High Court before withdrawing it and surrendering before the police.
“Police Inspector Nitin Kadam and Sub-Inspector Samadhan Jamdade were arrested in this connection on February 19. Investigation revealed that Wangte was allegedly extorting extortion from Angadiya located in Mumbadevi area of South Mumbai,” he said. He was given relief from arrest by the court till March 8.
“The crime branch has recorded the statements of 10 Angadiyas who have accused Wangte of extorting extortion from them on December 2, 3, 4 and 6. According to the local Angadiya Association, the police used to demand Rs 50,000 from him if he is transporting Rs 5 lakh in cash and Rs 1-2 lakh for transporting Rs 10 lakh in cash.” He said that during the investigation, the police got some evidence and footage of CCTV cameras against these three officers.
