Saji Cherian, a minister in the Kerala government, resigned from his post on Wednesday. After his resignation, Cherian alleged that a particular part of his speech was shown and the media had fabricated a story to weaken the CPI(M) and the LDF by showing it. Saji Cherian said that he has resigned and it is his personal decision, he has never insulted the Constitution.
Saji Cherian had recently faced criticism from several opposition parties for his controversial remarks against the Constitution. In the midst of this controversy, on Wednesday, he announced his resignation. Amid demands from the opposition for his sacking, Cherian said that it was his personal decision to step down as the minister.
He insisted that it was never his intention to insult the Constitution, for which he held the highest regard. Speaking at a party meeting in Pathanamthitta on Monday, Cherian made controversial remarks about the Constitution, saying it has been curtailed as an instrument of exploitation.
Cherian had said, “We often say that this is a beautiful Constitution. But we blindly copied the British system and wrote the constitution. It never provides any protection against exploitation. It helps to rob the common man and the working class.” His statement was strongly opposed by the main opposition Congress, while the BJP also strongly criticized it.
Congress and BJP criticized CPI-M: Congress had termed it as a very objectionable statement. While the BJP had targeted the CPI-M over this statement. However, after the resignation, Cherian has now clarified that he has never insulted the Constitution. He says that the media played a part of his speech, due to which the whole controversy escalated.
