New York: The Indian Embassy in the US has described as ‘unfortunate’ the incident of a cargo ship colliding with a bridge in Baltimore, Maryland state and resulting in the bridge falling into the river. The ship was manned by a 22-member Indian crew. The incident has paralyzed operations at one of the most important ports in the northeastern United States. Six people are feared dead in the incident. Many vehicles were passing through the bridge when the ship collided with a pillar of the 2.6 km long ‘Francis Scott Key Bridge’ late on Monday night. After the collision with the container, the bridge broke and fell into the river. During this time the ship caught fire and black smoke started coming out from it. Someone made a video of this incident and posted it on social media.
Indian Embassy created hotline
The Singapore-flagged vessel, the Singapore-flagged vessel, had an “electrical” problem and had sent a distress call moments before hitting the bridge, officials said. “Our heartfelt condolences to all those affected by the unfortunate accident with the ‘Francis Scott Key Bridge’ in Baltimore,” the Indian Embassy in the US said in a post on social media platform ‘X’. On behalf of the Indian Embassy, it was said that the Embassy has created a dedicated hotline for those Indian citizens who may have been affected by this incident or need assistance. The embassy is ascertaining details regarding the ship’s crew.
The crew had given information
Maryland Governor Wes Moore also told reporters that the cargo ship’s crew had alerted authorities to an “electrical issue” before the vessel hit the bridge, limiting traffic on the bridge. “These guys are heroes. They saved lives last night,” Moore said.
The crew members were Indians
Synergy Marine Group, which manages the vessel, said in a statement that there were 22 crew members on board the vessel ‘Dali’ and all were Indians. The statement said all crew members, including the two pilots, were safe and there were no injuries. The statement also said that there has been no pollution due to the incident. The group said in a statement that the ship collided with a pillar of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore at about 1:30 a.m. local time on Monday. When the ship collided with the bridge, the construction workers were working on filling the potholes. Rescue workers have pulled out two people from the river and six workers are still missing. These missing workers include citizens of Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico. After an all-day search and rescue operation, Rear Admiral Shannon Gilreath of the U.S. Coast Guard said the force was suspending the operation because the remaining workers were unlikely to be found alive. The coast guard suspended its search and rescue operations at 7:30 pm local time on Tuesday.
What did Joe Biden say?
US President Joe Biden said at the White House, “The crew on board alerted the Maryland Department of Transportation that they had lost control of their vessel. As a result, local officials were able to close the bridge to traffic before it collapsed.” “Undoubtedly people’s lives were saved.” Biden said he was sending needed resources in response to the emergency. “Together we will rebuild that port,” he said. He said it was a terrible accident. “At this time, we have no indication to believe that this was an intentional act,” the president said. Biden said the Port of Baltimore is one of the nation’s largest shipping hubs. The bridge opened in 1977 and spans the Patapsco River, a vital waterway. Ereck Barron, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland, said there is no evidence to indicate that the bridge collapsed. Has any connection with terrorism. Language
