Two people were killed and 92 others were injured after a massive earthquake struck northeastern Japan on Wednesday night. Police and fire officials gave this information on Thursday. The 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck seven prefectures, including Miyagi and Fukushima, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency. As of 06:30 a.m. local time, 92 people have been injured in the earthquake in these provinces.
Strong tremors were felt in the northeastern and eastern regions of the country, especially in the Miyagi and Fukushima regions, where tremors of more than six magnitudes were felt. The tremors of the earthquake were felt at around 1136 pm local time. The epicenter of the earthquake was located at 37.7 degree north latitude and 141.7 east longitude at a depth of 60 km.
Bullet train derails
A portion of the Tohoku Shinkansen bullet train service has been suspended after a bullet train derailed after an earthquake on Thursday morning. The East Nippon Expressway Company has temporarily closed several sections of the expressway, including the Thoku Expressway in Osaki, Miyagi Prefecture, and the Joban Expressway in Soma, Fukushima.
tsunami wave warning
After the tremors of the earthquake, the power supply to about 2 million (20 lakh) homes was disrupted. A one-metre tsunami wave warning was issued for coastal areas in Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures and people were urged to stay off the coast.
Let us tell you that in March last year also some similar strong tremors of earthquake were felt in Japan’s capital Tokyo. The earthquake then measured 7.2 according to the USGS.
