Bangalore. A man sentenced to 20 years in prison for planting an improvised explosive bomb at the Mangaluru International Airport in January 2020 had managed to procure raw materials for making explosives from online service provider Amazon. The investigating agencies have submitted a report to the court about the purchase of raw materials for making explosives online by accused Aditya Rao (37) and the same was mentioned by the court in the 80-page judgment.
They found that the accused had devised a design with intent to detonate the substance and endanger human life and collected information to prepare improvised explosive material by calling the ‘Just Dial’ company.
Rao visited several cyber centres, browsing centers as well as internet centers and collected information. The investigation report states that upon collection of such information, he had ordered the raw material required for the explosives from the Amazon website.
After collecting raw materials without any license, the accused had secretly kept them in the staff quarters of a family restaurant in Mangaluru.
He had mixed the raw material and prepared improvised explosive material without the permission of any authority. He then put the improvised explosive material in a black bag and carried it to the sensitive and crowded area at the departure gate of Mangaluru International Airport.
He fled from the airport leaving the black back containing improvised explosive material.
In 2018, the accused had applied for the post of security supervisor at Bengaluru airport and spent Rs 7,500 to secure the post. When his efforts failed and he could not get the job of security supervisor, he pretended that there was a bomb in Bangalore airport and railway station.
Later, he was arrested and sentenced to one year’s imprisonment. After serving one year’s sentence, he developed hatred towards the government and with this hatred he committed an offense punishable under section 4 of the Explosive Substances Act 1908 and section 16 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act 1967.
The facts that have emerged from the prosecution papers are that the accused had possessed improvised explosive substances with an intention to endanger the unity, integrated security and sovereignty of India.
Judge of the Fourth Additional District and Sessions Court of Dakshina Kannada district, B.R. Pallavi had sentenced the accused, 37-year-old Aditya Rao, to 20 years imprisonment on March 11.
The accused has been found guilty under Section 4 of the Explosive Substances Act 1908 and Section 16 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, 1967. He has also been fined Rs 10,000.
Aditya Rao planted a bomb at Mangaluru International Airport on January 20, 2020. The officers detected the bomb and destroyed it the same day.
However, convict Aditya Rao surrendered at the office of the Director General and Inspector General.
Since then he is in jail. Rao, a resident of Manipal in Udupi district, had pleaded guilty before the court.
