Chikkamagaluru. The Karnataka Police on Saturday detained Naxalite leader Savitri till April 8 for investigation. Savitri was produced by the authorities before the First Class Judicial Magistrate (JMFC) court in Sringeri city and the court handed her over to the police.
Savitri, a resident of Kalasa in Chikmagalur district, was active as a Naxalite since 2001. She was wanted in many cases. Another Naxalite leader B.G. Krishnamurthy was arrested by the Kerala Police.
Since then both have been lodged in jail in judicial custody. Savitri alias Rejita was working as the commander of Kabani Dalam of CPI (militant). Savitri was the wife of extremist leader Vikram Gowda, who is also in Kadani Dalam. He used to work in the Wayanad-Kozhikode region. She had separated from her husband.
The arrest of Savitri and Krishnamurthy was considered very valuable to the police. Krishnamurthy is known as BGK among Naxalites and was promoted to the Central Committee of the party. BGK had come from Sringeri town in Chikkamagaluru district and the police claim to have over 50 cases against him.
The arrests have been described as a major blow to the Maoist network in South India. He was arrested by the Kerala Police on November 9, 2021. Both are wanted by the Karnataka Police in various Naxal-related cases.
Savitri was named in more than 20 cases in Karnataka. Krishnamurthy was part of the Kudremukh forest campaign and other movements launched in the Malnad region of Karnataka from 2000.
