On Wednesday, major changes in the prohibition law in Bihar got the green signal of the assembly. Liquor Prohibition Amendment Bill has been passed in the Assembly. Excise Minister Sunil Kumar introduced Prohibition of Alcohol and Excise Amendment Bill 2022 in the House. The amendment was already approved by the Nitish cabinet. The amended bill will be sent to the Governor. After that it will take the form of law.
The biggest change in the prohibition law is that now those caught after drinking alcohol for the first time will not have to go to jail. The magistrate can leave with a fine. If you do not pay the fine, you will have to go to jail. But if caught repeatedly drinking alcohol, strict action can be taken. However, the amount of the fine has not been decided yet. What other provisions will be there in the amended law, its rules will be made.
The Bihar government had also received some guidelines from the Supreme Court regarding the prohibition law. After this the government decided to amend the law. Liquor ban came into force in the state in April 2016. There were allegations of sending a large number of innocent people to jail.
On the amendment, Minister Sunil Kumar says that the innocent will not be harassed but the guilty will not be released. If caught repeatedly, you will have to go to jail. The amendment has been made after considering all the points.
