New Delhi: The relationship between Maldives and India is almost in crisis. But fulfilling the duty of a good neighbour, the Indian government on Friday approved the supply of several essential commodities to Maldives, which include items like rice, wheat and onion. There is currently a ban on their export.
The Indian High Commission in Male said that the Government of India has allowed the export of these items for 2024-25 under the bilateral mechanism on the request of the Government of Maldives. After the implementation of the agreement in 1981, the export of goods is much more than the permitted quantity.

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in a notification that permission has been given to export these items to Maldives under the bilateral trade agreement between the two countries during the financial year 2024-25. In this, permission has been given to export eggs, potatoes, onions, rice, wheat flour, sugar, pulses, gravel and river sand to Maldives. Export of these goods to Maldives will be exempted from existing or future restrictions.
DGFT said that generally the export of these items is either completely banned or limited export is allowed. The approval for export has come at a time when relations between India and Maldives are at an all-time low. Especially after Mohammed Muizzu won the presidential election in Maldives. He increased closeness with China by ending the dependence of the Indian archipelago on India in strategic areas.
The statement said, ‘The quota of river sand (sand) and stone aggregate (tiles) for the rapidly growing construction industry in Maldives has increased by 25% to 1,000 metric tons. Besides, the quota of eggs, potatoes, onions, sugar, rice, wheat flour and pulses has also increased by 5%.
